“ in May 2014, our son Simon lost his battle with cancer, and it was a very difficult time for my wife and I. We knew what the outcome of his illness was going to be and had thought for some time about a final resting place for him. We felt that a burial at Norton Disney Big Wood was most appropriate, a quiet resting place in a clearing within mature woodland. I have to say how pleased we were with our decision, because all the staff at Hill Holt were fantastic. They looked after everything for us, helped us to choose a plot, and liased with the funeral directors. The burial was sensitively undertaken and nothing was too much trouble. We discussed and agreed the post funeral catering arrangements with them and this was held  at their centre at Hill Holt. Many of our friends and family were attending this type of burial for the first time, and the Hill Holt Environmental Social Enterprise was unknown…..after the burial we had so many of them say what a wonderful and peaceful place it was. We are able to visit the clearing at any reasonable time, and it is a joy to see the changing seasons at this wonderful place. We take comfort in the belief that we have given Simon what he would have wanted .”

"Norton Big Wood is a peaceful and beautiful place.  From the minute we met Oliver, the Head of Operations, I felt confident that we were in safe hands.  He met me and my son on a Saturday morning and showed us round and explained how we were able to choose the spot for my husband's ashes to be laid to rest and pick the species of tree to mark the spot.

On the way back to the car we spotted bird boxes that had been endorsed with memorials and Oliver explained that this was something we could also do.

On the day of the burial of the ashes, we were met and accompanied to the spot.  Paul's ashes were laid to rest by Oliver, all of the staff retreated to a respectful distance and then we were left to say our goodbyes.  The area was so peaceful and all of the family were very happy with the place we had chosen.  The birds were singing and even the sun managed to shine.  We left behind some woodland plants to place around the tree that they were happy to plant for us.

We now have a beautiful place we can visit to walk and remember Paul."
