Our Bright Future

“Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

Growing Up Green

Every once in a while there comes along a great opportunity to make an impact on the world and Our Bright Future was ours. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, Our Bright Future brought together 31 youth-led organisations led by the Wildlife Trust. A whopping £33 million was awarded to tackle three main issues; a lack of social cohesion, a lack of opportunities for young people and vulnerability to climate change.

Our project, Growing Up Green was chosen to enable young people to:

  • gain new skills,

  • engage young people with the environment,

  • inspire and inform young people to work towards sustainable communities,

  • empower young people to shape and care for their environment,

  • upskill (particularly those in need) and enable entry to employment,

  • increase biodiversity and sustainable land management,

  • increase awareness of future issues and the knowledge and skills required to address them.

Over 4000 Young people engaged with Nature and over 600 earned certificates in the first 4 years of the project, hitting our targets with a year to spare.

We believe that the young people we’ve met over the last few years are more connected to nature and have experienced the joys of the outdoors in all weathers. We have led workshops in Strawbale Building to the next generation of house builders, awakened awe in budding conservationists, stoked the fires of environmentalists and equipped them with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the issues facing them and their futures, their bright futures.

From humble acorns doth the mighty oak grow.

Have fun growing up green
