"Delivering sustainable construction skills to aid people and our planet"

Aims of the Project

Our key aim is to inspire others to consider the environmental impact of construction, adopt a sustainable approach and highlight the effect buildings can have on the environment whilst also offering suitable alternatives that could be utilised within the construction industry.

There are three strands that underpin our project and they are:

  • A need for more affordable housing

  • Meaningful employment

  • Sustainability in housing

We aim to educate people in the importance of addressing all these issues simultaneously, and try to instill a philosophy of looking at things in the longer term; so much is driven by finance and ego in our society and we feel that we need to guard against this short-termism and restore more traditional values.

Participants will gain practical hands-on experience building a Nordic-style log cabin (scribing logs to create bespoke hand-crafted joints), learn timber framing techniques in our Artist Studio Treehouse project and working with a variety of locally sourced timber to create bespoke furniture/products for installation within the build project.

Alongside the live construction work, participants will also complete two accredited courses in Strawbale Building and Reciprocal Framing. The Strawbale Building course provides an introduction to this building technique integrating how to split, dress and lay bales effectively. During the Reciprocal Framing course participants will explore the structure of this self-supporting frame, considering the underlying physics and demonstrating their understanding at different scales using locally coppiced hazel.

In addition to developing hard skills, the course encourages soft skill progression by promoting teamwork, leadership and communication; building confidence and self-esteem.

Get Involved

This project has been generously grant-funded and as a result is free of charge for all participants, available to anyone aged 16 or over, provided you have a full right to work in the UK, you are living in the Lincolnshire area and you are currently economically inactive or unemployed. We are delivering 4 courses to 5 participants at a time. Each course is 2 days per week (3 hours per day) for 8 weeks. Transport would be provided (for those without their own means of transport) from Lincoln and the surrounding area to make the course inclusive to all. All relevant Personal Protective Equipment would be provided by us also.
